Kintsugi

APOTROPIA (Antonella MIGNONE / Cristiano PANEPUCCIA) (Italy)

Entertainment Division 2014 Excellence Award4 min. 30 sec.
Video work

Kintsugi is a video-dance work based on an autobiographical story. In 2003, MIGNONE and PANEPUCCIA had a road accident, the serious consequences of which drastically changed their lives. In order to create this dance-for-camera piece, MIGNONE used the crutches that had accompanied her for years. Kintsugi, the Japanese technique of mending broken ceramics with goldfilled resin, is used as a poetic metaphor for physical and emotional healing processes. This technique has its roots in the belief that the object is more valuable and beautiful with its history revealed. A girl faces her journey of healing through the search for a new balance. Her tears turn into golden resin that repairs her scars. The absorption and transformation of trauma leads to the development of new possibilities.

A horse is harnessed to a cart. On the cart a female figure is standing on her four limbs, while the driver's seat remains empty. The horse stands still and only makes small movements with its face, tail and legs. We see the tremor of the female figure in her effort to keep her body suspended. This single sequence continues in an endless loop.

FAINT

Natalie PLASKURA (Germany)

Entertainment Division 2014 Jury Selections5 min. 58 sec.
Video work

Still life pictures, motionless people, obscure spiral staircases, and metronomes, that act as slow chronometers. One after the other, painting-like sceneries emerge. In this film, time stands still and moments are everlasting. The nameless characters turn into numb figures, surfacing and disappearing like mental tatters. The protagonist is trapped and strays through a confusing construction of thoughts, finally losing herself.

WE ARE OUTSIDE PLAYING IN THE GARDEN

Friederike HOPPE (Germany)

Entertainment Division 2014 Jury Selections10 min.
Video work

This film evokes the bizarre and slightly unsettling scenery of a so-called “indoor garden © institution”, a place where people can apply to go on holidays escaping from their everyday lives. The vacations on offer include experiences with ponies, garden games, and dressing up in princess costumes.
