Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2017

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival International Film Festival was held from Monday 12th to Saturday 17th July. The Japan Media Arts Festival had a booth at the MIFA -The International Animation Film Market and hosted a Japan reception to introduce Japan Media Arts Festival and other Japanese content widely.

Over 200 works officially selected from more than 2,800 entries submitted from around the world were screened during the festival. Cristal and other prizes were awarded to the most outstanding works in each category on the final day. The Cristal for the Best Feature Film went to Lu Over the Wall (dir. Masaaki YUASA), the first Japanese film to win the prize in 22 years and first ever not produced by Studio Ghibli. In this Corner of the World (dir. Sunao KATABUCHI) completed a double success for Japan by securing the Jury Award for Feature Films. Summer’s Puke is Winter’s Delight (dir. Sawako KABUKI) received the Jury Award for Graduation Films. The FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) jury and André-Martin short film awards went to Negative Space (dir. Max PORTER and Ru KUWAHATA).

3,000 companies and other organizations from 74 countries worldwide set up booths at this year’s MIFA (The International Animation Film Market) and more than 10,000 people visited during the festival. China was this year’s guest country with a collection of booths in the China Pavilion at the entrance and a joint exhibition, China, Art in Motion, arranged together with the prestigious Gobelins School of Images of France at the Chateau d’Annecy.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs hosted Japan Party on the June 14th from 19:00. There were introductions to the directors and works of Japanese animation directors who took part in the official selection and others included in the official screenings. The Japan Media Arts Festival welcomed 200 festival directors, animation directors and producers and others involved in the animation world to the party.

Overview

Annecy International Animation Film Festival is one of the world’s biggest animated film festivals. It started out as the animation division of the Cannes International Festival before becoming an independent official competitim event recognized by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) in 1960. The festival is held on the banks on Lake Annecy in the mountains of eastern France, close to the Swiss border. Besides the official competitim screenings, the wide-ranging activities also include conferences, the industry fair etc. In addition to animation business people from all over the world, many student and other ordinary citizens also visit.
