Expanded Animation

Thanks to advances in information and communications technology, most notably the internet, animation expressions and techniques have changed tremendously. Meanwhile, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has changed the ways and places in which we create and consume media, too. These changes have deepened the role and importance of animation, and inspired various never-before-seen concepts and expressions in the medium. This exhibit, from the Japan Media Arts Festival, run by Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, aims to introduce Japan’s movement of “Expanded Animation” and the bold works of its energetic creators to the world.

Panel: The Changing Face of Animation Festivals

MIFA Partners Conference

The Covid-19 pandemic forced a huge number of festivals online in 2020. Is the online form temporary, or will it continue even post-pandemic? Meanwhile, changes in modern art and platforms are contributing to the spread of animation, and leading to its integration into other forms such as games. How should animation festivals evolve in response to these changes? The directors of three major international animation festivals and the director of the Japan Media Arts Festival Overseas Promotion will explore those issues in this panel discussion.
