Director’s comment
Winner of the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival’s Grand Prize in the Manga Division, this work from UMINO Chica tells the story of KIRIYAMA Rei, a teenage shogi (Japanese chess) wonder who, despite his young age, has had a very difficult childhood after losing his parents and sister in a tragic car accident.
This has made him a sad, introverted, shy, and lonely character who finds in professional shogi a sort of escape. Even though he does not have a particular passion for the game, being such a good player allows him to go pro, and to live alone in a cold, grey and empty apartment near Tsukuda, in Tokyo.
There, fate brings him to the KAWAMOTO family, a household of three sisters and their grandfather who welcome him into their heart-warming house in one of the most traditional shitamachi (downtown area) neighborhoods of Tokyo. Thus, Rei’s life begins to change even as he engages in shogi matches and bears the pressure of being considered a “young wonder” by all his peers.
This astounding work combines the theme of the bonds of family and friends, as well as Rei’s coming-of-age story, with the world of shogi competitions. This is something a Western public can very much relate to, especially after the hugely popular chess-themed miniseries, The Queen’s Gambit (2020) and its protagonist Beth HARMON. March Comes in Like a Lion has been adapted into a hugely popular 44 episodes anime television series, as well as a two-part, live-action film.
March Comes in Like a Lion (16 volumes, ongoing) is scheduled to be published in English by Denpa, LLC, starting in summer 2022.
