TOKYO GARDEN / Exhibition
Synesthasia Garden
Daisuke Yamashiro (JP)
- Description
- A 15-minute staged installation composed of video, moving lights, sound, musical instruments, and multiple objects. The artist added movement and light to the objects on stage to the music created by musician Manami Kakudou. The theme of the work was Synesthesia, which is the perception of external stimuli through different senses. So far, two versions of the work have been created: an installation version and a theater version. This work is a video record of these two versions.
Video exhibitions are no longer available.
- Director’s message
- Yamashiro, known for his unique ability to “implicate” various things, has created a work that involves the power of Takanabe-cho in Miyazaki Prefecture, where he created this work, and the five senses of the audience. It is a landscape, and the space itself is a piece of music, a device that allows us to feel time. Humans have been able to create various things by manipulating nature, and this is a work that could be described as a landscape that reproduces nature using different media.

Daisuke Yamashiro (JP)
Artist/Filmmaker
Applying the concept of time within the film to spaces and projects, he creates works that depict a "time" that can only be experienced on the spot. Major works include “Time flows to everyone at the same time” (2010), a concert in a residential area of Hiroshima in which 50 boys and girls play the piano in their homes at the same time, and “Fly Me To The TIME” (2017), a concert in the port city of Nagoya in which he makes 27 promises to residents and the environment. In 2006, he founded the artist collective "Nadegata Instant Party" and has been actively showcasing his work around the country. He is a full-time lecturer at Kyoto University of Art.
